About
Subscribe for stories, lessons learned, and tips about small business finance & accounting for non-finance folks.
Who’s this newsletter for?
Field Notes is for the business owner who’s wearing every hat — including the finance one, even if it doesn’t quite fit yet.
Maybe you have reports, but aren’t sure what they’re actually telling you. Maybe your numbers feel like a foreign language, and you’re tired of nodding along in meetings with your accountant. Or maybe you just want to feel confident when it’s time to make a big financial decision.
That’s exactly who I write for. Whether you’re a founder in the early stages, a small business owner navigating growth, or a leader at a mission-driven organization — if you want finance to finally make sense for your business, you’re in the right place.
You’ll find real stories, honest lessons, and practical tips — with just enough finance vocabulary to help you understand what your banker, accountant, or investor is actually saying. I’ll also pull back the curtain on what it actually looks like to grow a consulting firm, sharing my reflections as I figure it out in real time. And because I can’t help but experiment with new tools and technology, I’ll bring you along for that too — what I’m testing, what’s working, and what’s flopped.
No eye-glazing jargon. Just the clarity you need to spot when something’s off, back up your gut with numbers, and feel a little more at home in your financials.
Who am I?
Over the past 7+ years, I've worked inside fast-moving, mission-driven businesses — building finance functions from scratch, untangling messy operations, and helping founders and leaders connect the dots between their numbers and their goals.
At Woolichooks, I work with clients as a fractional finance and accounting consultant — becoming part of their team, not just a vendor they call once a year. Field Notes is how I share what I've learned along the way, for free, with people who could use it.
My goal is simple: I want you to feel as comfortable with your finances as you do running the rest of your business. And maybe — just maybe — even enjoy it a little.
A quick disclaimer
Everything here reflects my own opinions and experiences as a finance consultant. I'm not your employee or your hired advisor, so all business decisions are yours to make. Please use this as a starting point, not a substitute for professional guidance tailored to your situation.
Thanks for being here!
